So I’ve been thinking and wanting and planning a tattoo for myself. I wanted to get proverbs 4:23 tattooed on the inside of my forearm. But now I am having second thoughts. I am not against tattooing in general and don’t think I’ll ever be, this is just in terms of my own body.
Here is a distilled version of a conversation with my friend and Sufi teacher David Weinthal:
“Study your motivation. Study your context. Think of tattooing this teaching on your heart and living in light of it’s truth before others, so as to draw their attention to God and not on yourself. Think of humbling yourself and exalting and drawing attention to the Spirit of God working through you. What’s your motivation for having this tattoo? What is it when you think of it in your heart? What is the appeal you find in your heart? Does this action represent your highest calling or path? Tattoos are not necessarily ‘bad’, but in light of your motivation, is it best for YOU?”
here’s what I was going to get tattooed on my forearm:

It is the arabic translation of Proverbs 4:23. “Watch over your heart with all diligence for from it flow the springs of life.”

If i ever do get a tattoo that would be it. although maybe it’s too holy a teaching to write on one’s body… i have reservations. it may be too perfect a thing to turn into a bumper stick on the body. like those who have christian bumper stickers that cut you off or tailgate you. if you put such a holy teaching on your body you should be prepared to live it and be in it. otherwise it could hurt you and others in ways currently unimaginable. just be careful what you put on your body, especially if it’s sacred.

I like the idea of this tattoo, but it is true…be ready to live upto what you put on your bady ESPECIALLY if it is so sacred. Maybe it will help you live up to it if it is on your body and remind you of your true motivation in life everyday. I have a question, I really want a tattoo and I know what I want but I need someone to do some calligraphy because I can’t design it…any suggestions anyone?
Thanks and good luck!
